Wheatgrass Flats
by: Amanda

I'm based in the U.K. and bought the seed trays from my local garden centre.

There made from recycled plastic and the standard size trays are 38 x 6 x 23.5 cm which is approximately 15 x 2.5 x 9 inches.

You can buy them in the USA on amazon.com

You can hopefully find similar trays at your local garden centre.

Some seed trays are solid and some have drainage holes which are useful if you like to water heavily and let the wheatgrass drain. I'd go for trays with drainage holes if you have a greenhouse, or if you plan to have your wheatgrss outside in the summer as the solid trays will fill with rain water and swamp the wheatgrass.

The solid trays are useful indoors as they fit over the trays with drainage holes and protect your windowsills.

Happy sprouting,
Amanda

Sunflower seed trays

How deep of a tray is required to grow sunflower seeds for sunflower greens? Should it have drain holes? Is plastic okay?

Trays for Growing Sunflower Greens
by: Amanda

For growing sunflower greens I use plastic seed trays that are approx. 6cm deep.

You should find them at your local garden centre, or you can buy them online.

I like to use trays with drainage holes.

If I'm growing sunflower greens or wheatgrass indoors, then I like to sit them inside another seed tray without holes, to catch the drips and avoid staining the windowsills ;-)

When growing sunflower greens or wheatgrass indoors you can just use the solid trays, but you need to be careful not to overwater, and if you do sit them outside and it rains then they can drown.

Really? You grow wonderful, healthy sprouts in chemically produced seed trays? Please tell me there's a healthier version of trays, like glass or ceramic?

Alternatives to Plastic Seed Trays
by: Amanda

I wish! I haven't found any that are easy to use for growing with soil and have drainage holes. I find watering from the bottom in the winter when my house is cooler reduces the chance of air born mold being attracted to my wheatgrass or sprouts.

You can use any container to grow wheatgrass or sprouts in but you'll need to be more careful with the watering if they don't have dranage holes. Some folk build there own out of wood. These tend to be heavier and more difficult to sterilise.

Health Centres such as the Hippocrates Health Institute and Tree of Life Centre grow their wheatgrass and sunflower greens using plastic trays so hopefully they can't be that bad?

For growing hydroponically there are lots of options. I have a lovely clay sprouter that I sometimes use to grow wheatgrass indoors.

For many years I created a simple sprouter by sitting a stainless steel seive inside a pyrex glass bowl which I kept in an airy cupboard by the sink.

I hope you find a solution that works well for you.

Happy sprouting,
Amanda

Food Grade Seed Trays
by: Christina

I purchased Food Grade Seed Trays. They were a little more expensive, but they were much more heavy duty, not flimsy like the non food grade trays. These Food Grade Seed Trays are White on the inside and black on the outside.

Seed trays

Where do you get seed trays that are "safe" for sprouting? Are they only made with plastic? Is plastic safe for reusing over and over?
Thanks

Green Wheatgrass Trays
by: Amanda

I live in the U.K. where I found them at my local garden centre.

In the U.S.A. Amazon.com stocks them:

Full Size Standard Green Seed Tray at Amazon.com

In the U.K. you can purchase them at Amazon.co.uk:

Garland Heavy Duty Plastic Seed Trays at Amazon.co.uk

The trays with drainage holes allow you to water from the bottom which helps to prevent mold.
The solid trays are useful to protect your windowsills and tables from drips.

Hope this helps,
Amanda

Green Trays for Wheatgrass? Square trays?
by: Amanda

I've been looking around for some more green trays. The ones I've got aren't square, but I prefer them in the house to gloomy black ones.

I originally got them from my local Hillier garden centre. I've moved up north since then but in the U.K. you can buy green trays here from the Hillier online store. Not sure about square ones?

Happy juicing,
Amanda
